I have learned in my practice to ask my students if they have tried learning another language in the past and what strategy they used in internalizing it.  The answers I would get would vary depending on the personality type of the student and the type of learner he/she is.

There are 3 basic types of language learners:

a.  The auditory learner.   This type of student learns  a language by listening and associating words they have heard to the concepts they represent.  They learn fast by mimicking native speakers.   A language teacher can use songs  and language games for this type of students as these activities help a lot in the learner’s mastery of vocabulary.   A  teacher can introduce round songs in class and these round songs can be used as energizers. Round songs are catchy and at the same time easy to teach because their melodies are repetitive as well as the lines.  By using round songs learners memorize vocabularies easily.  Aside from round songs, language games which have repetitive lines can also assist in mastery of some components of the target language.

b. The visual learner.  When a person is a visual learner, he learns fast when pictures are used during instruction.
The person’s imagination is very active and visualizing is the most effective way for him to learn.   Visual learners appreciate activities where they can apply their visualizing capabilities like map-making, coloring and illustrating.   They can easily recall concepts when they can visualize or see these concepts in their minds.  A language teacher can use games like pictionary as a motivation for learning.

c. The kinesthetic learner.   This learner is very tactile and always on the go.  He prefers to be moving rather than talking and reading.  They are also called ‘doers’.   For teachers, this learner can be exciting because teachers can employ many possible activities either to motivate or to reinforce the learner.  Some activities that can be used by teachers for this kind of learners are competitive games and activities where their creativity can be applied in.

A person’s interest and motivation play a big role in learning a different language.  If a  person is motivated enough to learn a language, he will use all resources that he has in order to understand and speak the target language.   Resources could include printed materials, audio helpers and even native speakers of the target language.  All these can assist and hasten the language learning of a person.
